Luderitz

Luderitz is an odd sleepy seaside town with plenty of stories to tell, including the nearby ghost towns of Kolmanskop and Elizabeth Bay, and the wild horses at Garub. The Germans developed this area from 1883 introducing German architecture to take advantage of the short-lived diamond rush. Once the diamond industry moved further south it left the beautiful buildings of Luderitz as relics of its once prosperous past and ultimately, transformed the nearby diamond rush settlements into ghost towns. The sands of the Namib desert have been gradually reclaiming the settlements of Kolmanskop and Elizabeth Bay -turning them into ghost towns; which now make a fascinating trip back in time and notable photo opportunities.

Overnight on board in port.

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay in Namibia is surrounded by mighty sand dunes and is situated on a wide lagoon with vast numbers of sea birds, pelicans and flamingos. Walvis Bay is a busy harbour town with a booming fish industry and sea salt fields. The lagoon is one of the most important wetlands of southern Africa and is the hibernation area for thousands of migratory birds. A unique experience is the adventurous 48 km drive to Sandwich Harbour, a freshwater lagoon surrounded by dunes, and a favourite amongst anglers and ornithologists.

Saint Helena

Saint Helena is a tropical volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the British Overseas Territory which also includes Ascension Island - 810 miles to the northwest and the islands of Tristan da Cunha - 1510 miles further south. Saint Helena measures about 10 by 5 miles and has a population of 4,255. The island was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1502; and is among the most remote islands in the world- being more than 1200 miles from Africa. Napoleon was imprisoned here as well as more than 5,000 Boers taken prisoner during the Second Boer War. Jamestown is the island's capital and if you venture further afield you can track the whole history of the British Empire on this single island including Longwood House, the Briars Pavilion and Napoleon's Tomb. A delightful heart shaped waterfall is located at the top of James Valley reached via a trail from Drummond's Point through the wild mango fields. A visit to High Knoll Fort and Sandy Bay beach are worthwhile too.
