Noumea

Noumea is situated 1985 Miles away from Australia and is the capital of New Caledonia’s largest island - Grand Terre. The island was first named by the French in 1866 and it first served as a penal colony. This small beach lined city which is surrounded by green mountains features a yacht filled marina and a waterside market place. Head to the Amadee lighthouse which marks the opening in the coral reef that surrounds the island creating the world’s largest lagoon to take advantage of its natural delights.

Mystery Island

Mystery Island, Vanuatu is a small uninhabited island which is primarily used as the ideal beach stop on a cruise itinerary. It has crystal clear water, vibrant coral reefs and powder white beaches. It is the southernmost island of the Vanuatu archipelago located approximately 93 miles south of the capital Port Vila. The island only has a circumference of just under a mile and so you can walk around it within 40 minutes. The Snorkelling here is superb as are the boat tours and water sports. It gained the name ready for the visit in 1974 by the Queen and Prince Philip to create an intriguing reason for their stop here. Clearly it was to chill out on the beach away from the crowds and prying eyes!

Vila

Vila is the capital of Vanuatu - a lush tropical group of islands in the South Pacific surrounded by white sandy beaches. Visit the Mele waterfall and have a dip in the Rarru cascades. Check out the Hideaway Marine Reserve and the underwater post office. This volcanic archipelago is situated 340 miles northeast of New Caledonia. In the 1880’s both the UK and France claimed parts of this island group. In 1906 Vanuatu was jointly managed by both countries and became known as the New Hebrides. In 1980 the country gained independence and was named the Republic of Vanuatu.

Lifou

The Loyalty Island chain of three islands are part of New Caledonia. They comprise of Lifou, Ouvea and Mare- the highest point is on Mare at 138 metres. The islands were annexed by France in 1853 and became part of New Caledonia in 1946.
