The nearest village to the cruise port is the fishing village of Mahahual approximately 3 kilometers away with soft sand beaches, grass thatched palapas, and a coral reef a short distance off-shore called Banco Chinchorro, as well as several bars, restaurants, and shops. Costa Maya is the closest port of access to many of the lesser known Mayan ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula.

The country's most important port, Puerto Limon was founded in 1870 as a port city to export bananas and grains from Costa Rica to various parts of the globe. One of the oldest cities on the continent, Puerto Limon was established in 1502 when Christopher Columbus landed here during his exploration of the New World. Located in Limon province along the Caribbean coast, Puerto Limon is the provincial capital of Limon and lies some 160 km east of the city of San Jose. Visit the Brava Volcano and the Brauilo Carrillo National Park, the Tortuguero National Park or the Cahuita National Park. Puerto Limon has some unusual surprises such as the Parque Vargas that sits in the east end of town facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Ocho Rios (Jamaica)

There are some top attractions on Jamaica – the biggest one being Dunns River Falls ( close to Ocho Rios) made famous by the James Bond film Dr No. Gentle bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae river made famous by Errol Flynn is exceedingly tranquil and worth doing. Another great trip is horse riding through the sugar cane plantations, on to the beach then swimming on your horse in the sea - absolutely marvellous. Perhaps visit the Blue Mountains and the coffee plantations for a unique souvenir or gift.

Grand Cayman (Cayman Islands)

This island remains part of the British Commonwealth and it is famed for its Scuba diving and white sandy beaches - in particular 7 Mile Beach close to Georgetown the capital. It is also one of the few nesting grounds of the loggerhead turtle. One of the best things to do is snorkelling with the Sting Rays – you will not be disappointed. Try visiting Hell - a village in the far corner of the island where you will find a turtle farm. Ships generally anchor off shore here and the island is reached by tender.

Cozumel

Cozumel is an island just 12 miles long and situated 20 minutes ferry ride from the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Cozumel is really a staging post for cruise passengers to visit mainland Mexico with its Mayan ruins at Tulum. Cozumel town is lively with its many bars and myriad of shops. Explore the Xel Ha aquatic park with its subterranean rivers, natural pools and sacred Mayan Lagoon. We found the scuba diving here to be the best in Caribbean. The best beach is located in the Punta Sur Ecological Park.
