Lisbon

The capital of the country situated on the North bank of the River Tagus as it flows under the imposing Vasco Da Gama suspension bridge (the longest in Europe) before it reaches the ocean. Within walking distance of the cruise terminal is the area known as is Belem - with the largest number of heritage sites connected with Portuguese maritime history such as the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos from 1501, the Maritime Museum and the Museum of Archaeology. The Torre de Belem is another marvellous monument and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Parque das Nações is the site of the 1998 World Fair; and is a lively area where the locals have fun, enjoy shows, go for a walk, play sport and shop. Funchal (Madeira)

Madeira is a volcanic and fertile island with a wonderful market square and excellent botanical gardens overlooking the ocean. Perhaps have tea in the famous Reid's Hotel or try tobogganing in a wicker basket down the steep cobbled streets.

La Palma

La Palma is also known as La Isla Bonita and is the most north westerly of the Canary Islands 137miles away from Tenerife with La Gomera in between. La Palma is the fifth largest of the eight Canary Islands.

The island features the second highest peak in the Canaries at 2,426 metres and the Cumbre Vieja volcano which last erupted in 2021 lasting for 85 days – it is currently dormant which makes for very interesting and recently changed landscape to see what impact this has made on the island and to its inhabitants.

Santa Cruz (Tenerife)

Las Palmas (Gran Canaria)

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura lays claim to having the best beaches not just in Spain but in Europe. Long stretches of spectacular golden sand sloping down to a rippling turquoise sea is the norm here. In contrast to the bar-lined promenades that typify other Canaries, many of the island’s 152 beaches are within protected areas or flanked by dunes.

Particular gems include those around Corralejo in the north, Sotavento, Costa Calma and Cofete in the south and the centrally located Caleta de Fuste. Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands at 62 miles long by 19 miles wide. The island is located 60 miles away from the coast of North Africa. The island lies 199 miles east of Tenerife with Gran Canaria in between.

Malaga

In Malaga you can visit nearby Grenada to see the world-famous Alhambra Palace, a masterpiece of Moorish art. Take an excursion to nearby Nerja to see the impressive prehistoric caves or take the kids on the wild rides at Tivoli World theme park.

Cadiz

Cadiz stands on a peninsula jutting out into a bay and is almost entirely surrounded by water. The Phoencians founded Cadiz as a trading post in 1100 BC and it became a thriving Roman port. It sank into oblivion under the Moors but attained great prominence in the early 16th century as a launching point for the journey to the new world in America. Cadiz was also raided by Sir Francis Drake and managed to withstand a siege by Napoleon's army. Cadiz is situated just 99km away from Seville which is the epicentre of Moorish architecture and history. With UNESCO classing a complex of three buildings in Seville as a World Heritage Site - namely the Cathedral, Alcazar Palace, and Archive of the Indies - it's no wonder that cruisers flock to Seville from Cadiz.

Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory on the south coast of Spain known for the Rock of Gibraltar, a 426m limestone ridge at its centre. Gibraltar occupies 7 sq. km of a peninsula bordered to the north by the region of Andalusia. First settled by Moors in the Middle Ages and later ruled by Spain, the outpost was joined to Britain in 1713. Gibraltar has its own airport where the main road across the peninsula runs directly across the runaway.
