Embark on your very own Robinson Crusoe desert island adventure
across the remote islands of the South Pacific on a quest discovering giant
stone carved heads and the legacy of the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty story.
Easter Island is one of the most remote bucket list destinations
possible midway between the coast of Chile and Tahiti approximately 2300 from
each. Its famous for the Easter Island heads called Moai of which there are
about 1,000 discovered so far (4 metres tall) - these were carved by the Rapa
Nui population 800 years ago as religious deities. The island is rather barren –
many say as a result of the deforestation caused by the building and the
transportation of the heads across the island. Approximately 1,300 further west
in the middle of the south pacific lies the Pitcairn Islands famous for the Mutiny
on the Bounty story where the mutineers HMS Bounty settled in 1790. This
British Overseas territory lies 3,300 miles away from New Zealand and has just
50-60 inhabitants descended from the original HMS Bounty.
Tahiti and her islands are situated halfway between Los Angeles and
Sydney. It is located 2,376 nautical miles south of Hawaii and 3,078 nautical
miles from Australia. The islands are in the same time zone as Hawaii and
located just as far south of the equator as Hawaii is north. The island is
divided into two parts with the larger portion to the northwest known as Tahiti
Nui, while the smaller, southeastern peninsula is known as Tahiti Iti. Tahiti
Nui is dominated by three extinct volcanic known for their incredible views. Papeete is the vibrant and multicultural capital city
with busy boulevards and a bustling harbour. There is a vibrant marketplace, and
also the Robert Wan Pearl Museum, which is a great place to start if you're
hoping to purchase a Tahitian black pearl during your stay. Visit Vai'ete
Square after sunset. This waterfront promenade comes to life at night with its
gourmet food trucks.
